OK here we go.
OK here we go.
It’s finally time to go public with the new site and you are looking at it.
It’s always going to be an ongoing thing adding content and product information but the basics are here. Feel free to wander round and look at everything. The tech columns have migrated over, and as an opening treat there are three new ones to check out. Just follow the “tech” link above… that’s also where you will find the wheel building guide if you are looking for it…
I also wanted to have some product news for the launch of the new site. So after a false start earlier in the year I am delighted to be able to announce that the new Ribcage rim is finally ready, it has passed final quality control, and will be shipping to US shops before the end of March. Supplies for the UK and Europe should be well on their way too.
They now are available in 48H Chrome. Hard Anodised finish and 36's are on the next shipment.
The price is a little higher than some other rims but this reflects the special material and finishes. The material used is around 20% stronger than even the 7000 series aluminium used for rims. And the hard anodising gives a black finish that performs nearly as well as chrome. Spoke holes are guaranteed not to pull through no matter what…
Final production weights are 482g (1.06lbs) for hard anodised and 525g (1.15lbs) for chrome.
The packaging is pretty cool too. We managed to find a way to use cardboard instead of plastic, this actually gives more protection to the rim during shipping and is better for the environment too.

from the site i gather your discontinuing vandal hubs?
also interested to hear any information on your pegs and the release date of your rims?
(editor note: this was posted before this posting was changed)

Hey Alex,
The Vandal hub was discontinued a couple of years ago now. With the release of the GLAND I felt that there wasnt really the need for it anymore.
Pegs are still in development... news later in the year.

Nice, been waiting for this rim to be made available for a while now. Is the chrome finish any better than Ody's other rims?

when is the next shippment of ribcage rims going to be?
Posted by: Alon Weissman | March 30, 2006 10:11 AM
Hey. Nice job on the rim. Is this rim better then a Odyssey 7ka for rear use?
Posted by: Aleks | March 30, 2006 10:15 AM
The chrome plating has been changed to a new factory and so far it seems much more consistant.
The Ribcage should build into a stronger wheel and resist denting a little better than the 7ka. As with ALL wheels, correct spoke tension is essential.

When are 36h Chromes arriving at empire?
Posted by: Luke | March 30, 2006 02:19 PM
As stated previously, only 48H CHROME came in. They should be at shops in 2 weeks.
36H Cp/Blk and 48H Blk should be on the next shipment, approx one month away.
Posted by: Jim B | March 30, 2006 02:52 PM
how should the spoke tension be on this unique rim? tight as a virgin or sorta.. like an 19 yr old?
Posted by: bikerj | March 30, 2006 07:11 PM
Hey g.
when you goin to make a street frame? & we need a g-sport cassette geez (like the khe hure hub). make one please! id buy one at 200 pound. sym hubs are made when ordered direct, couldn't you do the same & people will pay whatever. i like 13 tooth freewheels but dont last at all.
Posted by: Steve-o smith | March 30, 2006 08:05 PM
you suck
Posted by: hfdksh | March 30, 2006 08:40 PM
when or will there ever be a cassette made by g-sport??? because everything else is shit
Posted by: travis | March 31, 2006 12:48 AM
Spoke tension should be the same as any other wheel. Nice and tight, if you squeeze a couple of spokes together with your hand you shouldnt be able to pull them out of line by more than a couple of millimetres before they start to dig into your hand painfully...
The only way I will ever do a cassette is if I can come up with a totally reliable way of doing it. I do keep thinking about it but so far I have not hit on an idea I like enough. Meanwhile we have other projects to work on....
I probably do suck... but not enough to waste my time posting a crap insult on some random blog...
:)

How much are they going cost in the UK?
Posted by: Bob | April 1, 2006 12:05 PM
Hey G, I love the stuff. I can't wait to run a nice Ribcage and some G-pegs, how are they going to be like?
Posted by: Dan | April 1, 2006 02:36 PM
Im not saying you must make a cassette hub but you should look at the KHE. I'm going to run it just because it seems so similiar to my marmoset and the marmoset is the best front hub ever. The price is also no worse than any other Macneil or Shadow. I think you could do it. The hubs are great the rim looks awsome but I think a light super strong hub is a lot more important than pegs. There are plenty of good pegs out there but light weight cassette hubs just require to much matainence
Posted by: arvadabmx | April 1, 2006 09:35 PM
So if your ribcage is 1.15 lb. for chrome then it is lighter than the midway and almost as light as a 7ka. Is it stronger than a midway.
Posted by: arvadabmx | April 1, 2006 10:38 PM
How does your rim compare to odyssey 7k.
Thanks Terry
Posted by: Terry Munday | April 2, 2006 03:24 AM
Hi Terry,
The comparason to a 7ka is covered in an early question on here.
Compared to a Midway the Ribcage is a LOT lighter (liek a quarter of a pound). In most respects it should build into a wheel of similar strength but the sidewalls of the Midway are still likely to be a bit stronger. If you keep your tyres well inflated and dont suffer much from sidewall dings then the Ribcage is a good bet for you. If you have a Midway and already have problems with sidewall dings then the Ribcage is unlikely to be a good choice for you, unless you are prepared to start running your tyres at higher pressure.

What's the MSRP on the Ribcage rim? I can't seem to find it on any mailorder shops yet (Ables, Empire, etc.)
Posted by: Rob | April 3, 2006 11:42 PM
rims look nice, as for cassette, i just thought of something yesterday, uses your clutch bearing design but with "artificial" and constant slack. if ur intererested, ill draw a rough thing up and u'll tell me what u think/ or u bring it out/add to it.
Posted by: cankles | April 4, 2006 06:45 AM
We dont really set a recommended retail price, it's up to the shops. However I think the Ribcage is sold at the same price as the 7ka so it should come out at the same price.
Hey Cankles, thanks BUT...
Although there are a number of ways of adding slack to the one way roller bearing, it is likely to also put the loads on the clutch up. Those bearings are: A. very expensive and, B. have to be pretty big to handle the existing loads. Adding slack would put these loads up a LOT and I doubt that the one way bearing could cope with it for long. I didnt abandon this route without a lot of thought and I really cant see us going back that way.
Submitting a product idea without making a proper arrangement by email is NEVER a good idea for US or YOU...

ever thought about getting new colors 4 ur hubs?
Posted by: snazy | April 5, 2006 05:53 AM
Yes Sanzy, I did coloured hubs years ago then got fed up with the stocking issues... But there may be some limited edition colours in the next few months...

The Ribcages are as strong as a Midway, Bigcity but has weaker sidewalls. Are the side walls stronger than the Hazard Lite sidewalls????
Posted by: snazy | April 5, 2006 09:08 PM
^^^ Yes.
Posted by: George | April 6, 2006 06:49 AM
for the wombolts, have u decided to make the spindles at sproket 22 or the bigger size so you dont need a hat but cant run 22 sprockets?
Posted by: cankles | April 7, 2006 08:19 AM
g are you for sale
just wonderin
Posted by: barber | April 7, 2006 09:06 AM
hey g.
what happened to the 14mm ti bolts you done for the homer hubs.. you not getting any more made?
Posted by: steve-o | April 7, 2006 01:00 PM
^^^ I'm afraid not. That's what "limited edition" means.... If the price of Ti comes down then maybe one day...
Hey Cankles,
The Wombolts will be sized to fit the original 15/16" standard. So 22mm or any other rogue size will need modifying. I know this is a pain for some people but we need to get this area sorted once and for all and from a theoretical point of view the larger size really is better.
G.
Posted by: George | April 7, 2006 02:18 PM
is there a release date for the wombolts?
Posted by: Alex | April 9, 2006 09:49 AM
^^^ Not a firm one. We are still shooting for the end of this month but as with any first batch, unexpected things keep popping up. I will try to get some firmer idea of date this week.
Sorry for the wait.

hey, I'm riding a hazard lite chrom rim now, but the chrome has pealed off because of the cold i guess, so I was wundering if the black finish on the ribcage is more resistent then the chrome on the hazzard, and will the brakes work just as good as on a black ribcage as one a chrome haz??
Last question is; what is the wighjt difference on a Hazzard lite 48 rim, and a ribcage 36 black?
thanks G

Posted by: Will | April 13, 2006 10:49 AM
What kind of aluminum is the ribcage made out of? thanks
Posted by: Matt | April 13, 2006 08:57 PM
Hi Will,
The black finish is never going to peel away like chrome sometimes can, however it is slightly less wear resistant than chrome. If you keep your brakeblocks clean and free of bits of grit etc then the black will last a long time. Braking performance is personal preference. Chrome is generally considered better but is much much worse in the wet.
There isnt much weight difference between the Hazard Lite and the Ribcage but the Ribcage will be a lot stronger.
Matt,
The Ribcage is made from a special high strength alloy which we are keeping secret.

Posted by: George | April 14, 2006 04:14 AM
So the durelectra rim is weaker and heavier then the ribcage, while the black colour is the same?
Posted by: Aleks | April 14, 2006 06:47 AM
Hey, how much does one spoke weigh? koss they rule. Will they be coming out in black?
Posted by: Chris | April 15, 2006 05:17 AM
hey george when the rims gonna be on sale in the uk AS i cant find them anywhere.... nice one.... boy done good..dini
Posted by: dini | April 19, 2006 03:56 PM
Hey Aleks,
The black coating on the Ribcage is actually a bit thicker and tougher than the version used on the 7ka.
Hey Dini,
A few UK shops have the chrome 48 version listed as being available from Monday. The other versions including 36's in black or chrome and the 48 in black are about a month behind them, so I would guess we are looking at the end of May. Subject to quality control obviously.
